Obituary for Katherine A. Tomei (Merilli)

Katherine A. Tomei (Merilli)
A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on August 22 to join her loving husband, John.

Born on November 12, 1924, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Katherine moved to Akron in 1948 to begin her life with John. Although she was far from her original home, she made a new home and was blessed with a loving family while faithfully serving God and others.

Her main joy was cooking for her family. Homemade spaghetti, ravioli, gnocchi, wedding soup, cream puffs and apple pies were her specialty. To an Italian woman, food is love. And we sure felt her love. Thankfully, she’s passed that on to her children and grandchildren.

Katherine was a member of Blessed Trinity Parish (St. Martha) and worked many years there as a member of the kitchen staff. Her wonderful cooking and selfless serving of others was a gift to countless school children who passed through the cafeteria doors.

She is survived by: children: Theresa (Rick) Fraley, John (Loretta) Tomei, Greg (Marianne) Tomei; grandchildren: Ricky (Lisa) Fraley, Sarah (Kevin) Hastings, Philip Tomei, Michele (Brian) Garey, Marisa Tomei and Annie Tomei; great grandchildren: Jacob and Kaelyn Fraley; brothers-in-law Freddy and Armando; sister-in-law, Louise; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gregorio and Rosa, sister, Susan, brothers, John and Joe, sisters-in-law, Anne, Jennie, Angelina, Lena and Daisy, brothers-in-law Paul, Joe and Victor, and great grandson, Ricky.

She will be dearly missed, but we know that she has been reunited with all those she loved so dearly who have passed before.

The family wishes to thank and offer blessings to the wonderful nurses, caregivers and staff at Cardinal Village and Bath Manor where mom was treated with the care and dignity she deserved.

Mass of Christian burial will be at Blessed Trinity Parish on Saturday, August 27, at 10 AM. Family and friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the funeral.

Donations can be made to Blessed Trinity Parish Food Pantry, where in her memory, mom will continue to feed the hungry.
