Obituary for Walter Drabold Jr.

Walter Drabold Jr. died on Nov. 8, after an extended struggle with Alzheimers. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Ann (nee’ Siebenthal) of Stow and her children, Janie, Jack, Gene and Jay; his only child, David Alan Drabold and daughter-in-law Michele Papai of Athens, Ohio, and two grandsons, Will Drabold of Washington, D. C. and Edward Drabold of Athens, Ohio. He survived his parents, Walter Drabold and Leona Mae Harris, his brother Raymond “Bud” Drabold and sister Shirley Berndt.

Walter was born in Detroit on Dec. 27, 1928. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, as a member of the Signal Corps, serving mostly in Alaska. After the Army, he came to Akron in 1953, where he married Marjorie Jane Ruthenberg in June, 1954, with whom he had a son, David. Marjorie died in 1986. Walter spent most of his career at Vaughn Machinery in Cuyahoga Falls, where he was a Sales Engineer specializing in copper tube drawing machinery. He traveled extensively, and returned with many tales of Europe, Asia and South Africa. Walter was a Free Mason, and member of Unity of Akron, which he joined in 1953. In 1978, he moved to Stow, where he has resided ever since.

Walter loved lakes and boats, initially spending time with his father on the Detroit River, as a child visiting his grandmother in Port Huron, Michigan and after coming to Ohio, spent countless happy hours motoring around his beloved Portage Lakes, and in recent years lived part of the year with Ann on Lake Erie. His other hobbies included electronics and computing. He also had a lifelong attraction to automobiles, extending back to his childhood. He was a devoted father and husband.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016 at the Dunn-Quigley Stow Chapel (3333 Kent Rd. at Rt. 91 where friends may call one hour prior to the service. A private interment will take place later.
