Obituary for Barbara Ellis (Yovan)

On Friday, July 16, 2021, Barbara Jean Yovan Ellis, loving wife and mother, passed away at the age of 82. With the help of some amazing people from hospice and her dedicated family, she was well taken care of until she passed peacefully at her home in Uniontown, Ohio.

Barbara was born in 1939 to William and Susan Yovan. She received her degree of Associate in Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of Bridgeport on June 7, 1959. She practiced Dental Hygiene for many years, the last dental office that she worked for was Dr. William Miller in Ravenna, Ohio. She loved her occupation so much that she volunteered her own time in local school systems, teaching grade school children dental health. She married John Ellis on May 31, 1963. They raised 3 children of their own and helped raise 4 children from John’s first marriage. She truly loved everyone as if they were one family.

Barbara and John shared many hobbies which fostered their love for each other. They met through John’s love of German Shepherd Dogs. He was an AKC breeder and Barbara was looking to purchase her first pure bred Shepherd. They raised and showed German Shepherds together, for a period they owned and ran Elkampf Kennels, an AKC registered German Shepherd Kennel. They also had a love of camping. Every summer they would take at least one long trip camping to places all throughout New England, from Pennsylvania to Maine. Their favorite vacations being on the coast of Rhode Island where they would go out clamming at low tide and buy fresh seafood right off the dock as it was coming in. Their last big hobby together was a love of gardening. Every year they had at least one enormous garden with every kind of vegetable you could imagine. Some years there were two large gardens, which we all got to help pull weeds out of.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents William and Susan, her brothers William Jr., Paul, and her Step-daughter Elizabeth. She is survived by her 3 children Vernon, Robert, Suzanne, her step-children John Jr (Susan), Sharon, Marianne (Ben), her brother Dwayne, her sister Suzanne, and numerous Nieces, Nephews, Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. Out of all her loves in life, her family is what she held dearest to her heart.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, or Nativity of The Lord Catholic Church in Akron.

Graveside services and inurnment will take place on Monday Aug. 2 at 9:15 a.m.
