Obituary for Clyde Victor Dye
Clyde Victor Dye, 94 of Akron, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2017.
Clyde was born in Swords Creek, Virginia then moved to Akron at age 3. Although Akron was his home he had a lifelong love of Virginia and spent many summers there in his youth. During World War II he served as a radar man in the US Navy on the USS McConnell. He worked for 27 years at General Tire, making the last truck tires made in the Akron plant. A self-taught engineer, Clyde was given awards for engineering improvements from General Tire and held multiple patents.
He married Patricia J. Deshon 70 years ago and carried her graduation picture in his wallet every day of his life. He had a passion for horses and rodeo events; and enjoyed calf and steer roping winning several events during his career.
Clyde was recently featured in an article for the U.S. Library of Congress titled "The Last of the Best", chronicling WWII veterans and their service memories. He was called upon to participate in the archiving program because of his sharp memory and vivid recall of details from his time serving in the US Navy.
Preceded in death by his brother, Elmer and son, William, Clyde is survived by his wife Patricia; brother, James; two sons, Thomas Dye (Mary) and Phillip Dye (Susan); five daughters, Susan Lavery, Mary Farkas (Jack), Janet Renner (John), Judith Gilchrist (Michael), and Cathy McCausland (Jerry); as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 7 from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home (811 Grant St.) Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10am at St Mary's Catholic Church in Akron, with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, where VFW Post 3383 will render military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Mary’s Catholic Church.
