Douglas was born on March 13, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Lawrence and Ida (Feistel) Auckland. He was the younger of two children - his brother, Larry, was three years older. As young boys, they were very close. Between the years of 1936 and 1947, the family spent two weeks each summer at Hotel Beausejour in Jamot, Ontario. These were among his happiest memories. Dad always loved being outside (hunting, fishing, golfing and gardening most of his life), and he continued his love for the outdoors by taking long walks outside, even until a few weeks before he passed beyond the vail...
In 1949, Dad met our mom, Maxine Edwards, on a blind date. She was attending high school at Andrews School for Girls in Willoughby, Ohio. Dad waited until the second date to propose, and they were married on July 14th, 1951. They spent a week in Michigan for their honeymoon, then Dad, who was now in the Army, was deployed to Japan for eighteen months. Upon returning home, they began to build their life together, living in Cleveland, where Dad graduated from Fenn College (now Cleveland State University). In 1960, they moved to Stow, Ohio, where they brought up their six children. Dad worked for Terex corporation in Hudson as a service training instructor. After taking early retirement when Terex closed, he worked for the Cadillac division of General Motors. He concluded his working career as an employee at the management company owned by his daughter, Cindy, helping with banking responsibilities, and putting a smile on the faces of all the bank tellers.
When mom went into nursing care, Dad moved into an apartment in the same facility so he could be with her every day. They were deeply devoted to each other, together every waking moment, and always best friends. They had been married for 68 years when Mom went home to be with the Lord in 2019. Dad finally moved into a home in Mogadore, where Dan and Eileen took excellent care of him (along with their Black Lab dogs that were such a joy to him!).
Dad will surely be missed for his heart for others, and tenderness towards all those he knew and loved. We are looking forward to being reunited with Him one day in heaven.
