Obituary for Dr. Nicholas V. Rimedio

Dr. Nicholas V. Rimedio, Sr. went to final rest on Saturday, September 17, 2022, a few months before he planned to celebrate another Buckeye win over arch rival Michigan.  Known as “Doc” by thousands, he is best remembered in his many roles as Doctor, Friend, Son, Papa, and Father. Our Dad will rejoin his parents James and Evelyn (Toriello), and countless relatives of his extended family including those with whom he was particularly close: uncles Dominic Rimedio (Aunt Mary), John Toriello (Aunt Victoria), and Leonard Schiavone (Aunt Vera). His Uncle Leonard and Aunt Vera had a special place in his heart with so many wonderful meals and time spent together in their final years. His closest friend, Dick Philips, will be thrilled to see him again to resume their long-standing tradition of pranks, as well as other friends including Bob Linton, Steve Iaconni, Dr. Val Rongus, and Chris Hamad. Other families with whom he had a great connection include the Piscazzi’s (Joe, Judy, Alisa, Tina, and Anthony), Otis’ (Jim, Paula, Scott, and Jim), Scintas’ (Joe, Frank, Chrissy, Bucko and Mary), and the Hamad’s with whom he spent the last several years so closely connected (Sandy, Peggy, Tana, Chris, Jon, Kara, Karli, and Adam).

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Nick was a dutiful son who began working in his family’s Italian grocery store at the age of four, and then progressed to cutting meat with his father and uncles throughout his childhood. Upon his graduation from Youngstown Ursuline, he later went into the Navy during the Korean War which ignited his passion for medicine as he was assigned to the Med Corp and stationed in Annapolis with the offer to become a naval surgeon. His dream was temporarily postponed when his father broke his hip, and Nick volunteered to return home to oversee the store for a year while he recuperated. This example of selflessness and dedication to his family would become a reoccurring theme throughout his life.

Nick later finished his undergraduate studies at Youngstown State and then went to Des Moine’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in which he completed his medical degree in four years that was described as “two weeks” by a professor at his graduation. Nick’s parents closed the store over Memorial Day weekend in 1961, proudly displaying the message on their billboard “Our Son is Graduating, Dr. N. V. Rimedio!”

He began his medical career in Cuyahoga Falls with an office on Bailey Road, conducted house calls, and did rounds at the Green Cross Hospital to which would later become Cuyahoga Falls General. He taught sailing at Cuyahoga Falls High School in the 60s, and then completed a dream in 1975 when he built Tallmadge Primary Care on South Avenue with his partners where he worked for almost 30 years before moving to a smaller office in Munroe Falls where he worked until his retirement in May 2021 almost 60 years from where he began serving generations of families in Northeastern Ohio. He truly loved his patients, and his easygoing humor and genuine care made him beloved to so many.

His biggest fans though were his children as Nick took deep pride in his role as a father. His firstborn son, James (mother Sandy Sampson Rimedio) was the beginning of a family that later expanded quickly with Nicholas Jr., Ryan, Jonathan, and Kara (mother Randi Brittain Rimedio), residing at 2850 Marcia Blvd. for over 40 years which became a very special place for holiday gatherings and neighborhood parties for decades. Family traditions included summer vacations in Myrtle Beach, and driving the motor home “Big Buc” to Ohio State games in the fall as the Buckeyes were his favorite pastime. His mother, Evelyn, was a special fixture in their household, helping Nick and Randi to create so many wonderful memories over the years for their kids.

Nick was so proud to see his family grow over the years with the amazing additions of spouses and grandchildren- James (Sherri), Ryan (Brooke, grandchildren Gianna and Dylan), Jonathan (Allyse, grandchildren Giovanni, Luca, and Matteo), Kara (Chayson, grandchildren Everly and Noah). His deep love, humor, and wisdom will be both sorely missed and always remembered through the deep tenor of his voice that we simply knew as our Dad.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dunn-Quigley Stow Chapel (3333 Kent Rd. at Rt. 91). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown (248 Belle Vista Ave., 44509).

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
