Obituary for Mary Viola Norris (Filyo)
Mary Viola Norris, 90, of Stow passed away on January 20, 2019. Born on January 21, 1928 in Toledo, the daughter of Stephen and Mary Filyo, she came to Cleveland/Akron area in 1970. She lost her dad when she was 9 leaving her mother and younger brother Stephen. Always kind and gentle she was caregiver to her mother Mary who died at 96 and mother-in-law Barbara who died at 105 for many years. Mary had met her loving and most caring husband, Jim, in grade school and eventually married at St.Thomas Aquinas in Toledo. On April 26, they would have been married for 72 years.
A devout practicing Roman Catholic, she was most devoted to Mary and the Rosary. She attended daily mass when she was still able to and knew the sisters at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine well. She was also a Stephen's minister. Mom was our spiritual guidance and leader. We are all products of a Roman Catholic education primary, secondary and for Barbara even undergraduate and graduate. More importantly, we practice her greatest gift to us, the Catholic faith.
An amazing cook Mom made many Hungarian recipes passed down from her family and even German recipes from her husband's side. Her Italian side not well known also gave her the ability to make amazing meatballs. She was generous and very artistic making many beautiful porcelain lace dolls displayed in her home. She spoke two languages, English and Hungarian fluently. Mom was a generous gift giver and gifts were well chosen for everyone. Interestingly enough, her paternal grandfather Andrew Filyo owned Catawba Island.
Mom is missed and will be always. She was a loving, devoted and kind wife to Jim, mother to Barbara, grandmother to Michael (Mary) and Anthony and great grandmother to James, Ethan and Kara.
Calling hours will be on Friday at the Dunn-Quigley Stow Chapel (3333 Kent Rd. at Rt. 91) from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Interment will take place on Saturday at Calvary Cemetery in Toledo.
