Obituary for Patrick Jay Smith

Patrick Jay Smith
Patrick Jay Smith, 65, of Stow was reunited with his father in Heaven on Thursday, after fighting a long and courageous battle with cancer. Always armed with and unmistakable smile and a clever joke, "P.J." was a lot of things to a lot of people - a proud Marine, avid fisherman, skilled kayaker, talented household chef, and 35 year veteran of the Penn Central, Conrail, and Norfolk Southern Railroad Companies. But above all he was a beloved and devoted family man, through and through. Indeed, he was most passionate about his two young grandsons, Wyatt and Abraham, and his "three girls" - daughters, Morgan and Madelyn, and the love of his life, his wife Cheryl (Germano-Smith) whom he cherished throughout more than 40 years of marriage. The days he treasured most were those spent with his family camping out at West Branch State Park and worshipping at Redeemer North Hill United Methodist Church where he proudly served for many years on the Board of Trustees. A genuinely kind soul, Pat had a giant heart and easily won friends everywhere life took him. Up to the very end, he always strove to put others first, rarely complaining even throughout the final stages of his illness.
Among those who loved him most, he is also survived by, and now watches over, his loving mother, Ramona Smith; his brother, Bruce (Diane); his sisters, Paula (Dale) and Elizabeth (Randy); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. To say he will be missed is a gross understatement. He made the world a better place just by having lived on it. Those who would like to pay their respects can do so on Monday, April 16th from 3 to 7 p.m. at Redeemer North Hill United Methodist Church (265 E. Cuyahoga Falls Ave.) where Pastor Joyce Fast will officiate at a funeral service at 7:00. Inurnment will take place with military honors on Thursday, April 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Redeemer Church or to LifeBanc.
