Obituary for Paul J. Stitzel

Paul Joseph Stitzel, a beloved husband, father, and friend passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 28 at age ninety-four. Born to Paul Sr and Marie (nee Gill), Paul grew up in Rockville Center, NY graduating from Chaminade High School, served in the Army, and then moved to the Akron area with his parents. There he met and married his wife of 72 years, Betty Reidy. Betty and Paul raised their 7 children in Stow, moved to Indianapolis for his career then retired in Silver Lake.

Paul attended John Carroll University where he earned his degree in Accounting. He started his career as an accountant at St. Thomas Hospital before moving to the newly formed Brentwood Hospital as the administrator. He continued as administrator for Cuyahoga Falls General, President of St. Alexis Hospital, and retired from St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.

Paul cherished his Catholic faith having a special devotion to Mary and Joseph. He and Betty were active members of Holy Family Parish, where they were instrumental in starting the Eucharistic Adoration program. In addition to his faith, Paul loved his family and had varied interests throughout his life which included having his private pilots license, flying radio controlled planes, baking pies, making bad wine and walking to Marc’s and the library on an almost daily basis.

Paul is proceeded in death by his parents Paul Sr and Marie Stitzel, his sister and brother-in-law Helen and Paul Deibel, his in-laws Agnes and Henry Reidy and his daughter-in-law Marylea Stitzel (nee Schick).
He is survived by his wife, Betty, his sons Paul (Debbie), John (Stori), Jim (Vesna), Mark (Gloria), Tom (Stephanie), Ted (Rita) and his daughter Ann (Dave) Harry . Paul is also survived by his twenty-four grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.

Paul spent his last few months at The Danbury of Hudson where he received amazing care by the loving staff. The kindness of Quaona, Jodie, Megan, Shelly, Jen and Virginia will always be held dearly by his family. Paul loved all of you.

Paul would want to thank his family and friends for their support but most especially his daughter Ann, who has tirelessly provided her loving care and guidance to both he and Betty in their time of need.

Calling hours will be Saturday 9/3 at Dunn Quigley funeral home in Stow from 9:00 – 10:30 am. Mass of Christian burial will be held 11:00am on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stow with lunch to follow.
