Obituary for Richard B. "Richie B." Masterson

Richard B. Masterson (“Richie B”), 78, of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away unexpectedly on December 26, 2020, from complications of Covid-19.

Rich was born in February, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio to John F. and Margaret (Joyce) Masterson. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1960 and from Ohio University in 1964. He married Audrey (Kozak) in November 1965. After graduating from Ohio University he served in the Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. Following his time with the Air Force he joined the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company as an auditor of company stores. After 20 years, he left to pursue his dream to open his own CPA business. He continued to go to his office every day until he became ill in December.

Rich is survived by his daughter Michele Masterson, son Jason (Vicki) Masterson, older brother Jim (Sandy) Masterson, younger sister Margie Eschen, grandchildren Grady and Macy Masterson, granddaughter Kayla Pearson, and many loving nieces, nephews, and relatives. Rich was a loving father, husband, grandfather, uncle, and friend to everyone. He was preceded in death by his wife Audrey, parents John and Margaret, and brother John (Eleanor).

Rich loved sports and was a life long Cleveland Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers fan and an avid golfer. He golfed in several leagues each summer. He also like to bet the horses, especially the Kentucky Derby. He’s been an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for over 40 years, holding several offices at the local and state levels including past president. He was also a former Commander of the American Legion and regular at posts #281 and #449. He enjoyed traveling with Akron AAA guided bus trips, Shakespeare at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, and musicals at the Cleveland Playhouse Square. His favorite movie was The Quiet Man with favorite quotes: “And who taught you to be playin’ patty-fingers in the Holy Water?” and “I could tell you blood curdling stories about him, but, but, me throat, me throat’s gone dry.” Aside from golf days his favorite time of the year was The Green Season every March attending All Irish Day and marching in the Akron St. Patrick’s Day Parade. For 39 years he volunteered at the Akron Feis held each Memorial Day weekend tabulating and posting the dancers results and scores from the judges.

He lived a full and happy life and will be missed by so many friends. A special thank you to the people at Summa Akron City Hospital for their loving care and support during his final days. The family would also like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ancient Order of Hibernians Mark Heffernan Division #2 at 2000 Brown St., Akron, Ohio 44319.
