George gets a Hole-In-One

I worked with George at Demag from 1979 through 1993, and as I was in Product managment  often had a competitive, but friendly, relationship with George who was in Charge of Electrical Engineering.

Every Friday afternoon in the Summer many us of participated in the Demag Company golf league, which for years was played at LanderHaven Golf Course . The day that George and I were to play as opponents, was a good one, .....as I was ready to beat George at golf (I was a better golfer) and George was ready to show the young Mkt guy (me) that he was a determined competitor.

During the match, we were "jawing" at each other, mostly freindly, but some comments with a sharp edge...just to see if we could throw the other one off a bit. i had to give George a few strokes in handicap, but our 9 hole match was very close, as George had brought his "A" game. By the 9th hole I was up on George by one stroke (incl. HDCP) and we finished on a 150 yard par 3. I put a ball onto the right fringe of the green, confident that I was going to beat George this day. George got up and hit the best shot of the day, and the ball sailed over the hole to the back edge of the sloped green,...maybe 20  feet above the hole. George turned back to me, and said, "David you may win this one", and had a frown on his face, but I was still watching his ball start to roll backwards on the heavily sloped green....towards the hole. To my horror, the ball accelerated, hit the pin and fell in!  I hollered, "It went In,,, I don't believe it , it went in!",....and Geroge thought I was still teasing him (his back was still turned away from the hole) and started to get mad at me for teasing him.  I had to make him turn around, and said, "George Look, your ball is gone...it rollled back and went IN!!"

George's face went from annoyance (at me) to disbelief, and then joy...as the realization hit him that he had just experienced one of golf's biggest "highs", a hole-in one!  While walking up to the Green, George also realized that beyond getting a hole-in- one, he had also moved up two stokes on his opponent, and beaten the yonger smart-alec Marketing guy (Me).   To this day. I am not sure which experience gave George more pleasure, the Hole-in-one or beating me!

I still teased George when we golfed after that, not for him getting a Hole-in- one , but the fact that I was the only one that saw it.  A fond memory...one that I hope for those that knew George well, will also enjoy.

Sincerely,

David Marshall
