Though it seems I knew your father forever—approx. 50 years—I really only knew him for half his lifetime. 98! Golly! I still have a couple of those gizmos he made with marbles that rest into cavities on either side of the gizmo. Once dislodged, these marbles can only get back into their cavities via centripetal force—you must spin the entire gizmo around it’s own axis for the marbles to get back into their cavities. It’s a kinetic puzzle, really. I’ve had so much fun with these gizmos over the years. Folks visit, take an interest in the puzzles, dislodge the marbles and I feign great insult that they would “ruin” my puzzle and I tell them they cannot leave my home unless/until they get the marbles back in place. NO ONE is ever able to “fix” the puzzles. I’ve had so much fun with them. I tell them about your Dad and how he makes these kinds of little toys for his grandchildren (Andy secreted me a couple of them).
So, you see, I’ve everlasting memory of your Dad with these silly things. I also remember, back in high school, that nearly every time I visited Andy, your Dad was working on the car. It was some station wagon—with wood paneling on the sides, I think. He always seemed to fix it, though. And, he was nearly always in good humor—despite whatever “issues” may have been involved with the Botzman mega-family and despite his having worked several million hours a week at Superior Tool & Die for so many years.
Most of all, what I’ll remember about Mr. Botzman is that he did what he had to do to take care of his family. That’s what a good man does. In and of itself, I think that’s as good a legacy as anyone can create.
May he rest in peace. He has surely earned it. My most heartfelt condolences to the entire, extended Botzman family.
