I often think about the time when I was 5 yrs old. My Dad didn't want me by the 55 gal steel barrel that he used to burn sticks in. Mom was in the house, in the livingroom, holding my baby brother Victor. Now, you could only see this burn barrel from the backdoor in the kitchen. Well, being the kid I was, I didn"t follow Dad's orders to stay away from the fire as my older brothers and sister were putting sticks in it and burning them. Dad went in the house, down to the basement. Well, the fire was going out and I wanted to put it out competely by pouring water on it!!
My dad had a older classic car he was working on and there was an old tin coffee can sitting there, that he always told me, not to touch by the way, and it was full of gasoline!! Looked like 'water' to me !
Mom said she suddenly had the feelling to put the baby on the floor and go get something in the KITCHEN!! As soon as she walk in the room she couldn't think of what she came in there for. Right at that moment, I poured a whole coffee can of GASOLINE into the barrel !!
Mom saw the Huge flame and me on FIRE !! My brothers and sister were so scared they ran away from me and the flames!! Now, that kitchen door used to stick a little and you would have to push on it a little to open it sometimes, well mom BUSTED right through it and grabed me and put me on the ground and rolled me over and over and put the flames out.
She carried me into the kitchen and got the burnt clothes off me, but my face and mostly chin was severely burned. Dad came racing up the stairs and said " What the heck is going on up here??"
Well, needless to say , they rushed me to the hospital and after 2 weeks of skin grafts and bandages, I only have 3 small scars on my lower chin, that's the only consequence: that I can never have a full beard there. but because of mom's fast, God given reactions, it could've been MUCH worse. I have thanked her and God for that for years. She's not only my mom, but my HERO!!
