George was an older cousin and since I didn’t have a brother he did things like a brother would do for me. He wrote to me when he was in the Air Force, stationed in Alaska. I would ask his advice and he always answered, giving me a Guy perspective. He was courtly. He would gently guide you by your elbow into the inside track on the sidewalk, he opened doors, he gave compliments. The last time I saw him, at our family’s applebutter reunion in 2013, he gave all the women jewelry he had particularly picked for them. He gave me a cross necklace. He gave the guys knives. He had been planning it for awhile. In recent years we maybe talked on the phone maybe once a year. But he had a special place in my heart and I will miss his presence in this old world.
