Obituary for John Richard Pamer

John Richard Pamer
John R. Pamer

John R. Pamer, age 80, of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away March 21, 2014, at home surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A lifelong resident of the Akron area, John graduated from St. Mary's High School and attended Ohio Northern University, earning a bachelors degree in Pharmacy. His career began at Conroy Drug and Youngfellow Drug stores, where he became known for treating his customers with kindness and compassion. He went on to work at St. Thomas Hospital and retired as Director of Pharmacy Services. He touched many lives while working there and was recognized for his positive attitude and consideration of others.

After retirement, John served as treasurer for the Cuyahoga Falls Friends of the Library and could be found greeting people and working the register at the annual book sale. He was on the planning committee for his high school class reunions and up until his final bout with cancer, regularly met with fellow graduates for lunch at the Hartville Kitchen.

One of John's favorite pastimes was fishing in the Portage Lakes, often getting up at the crack of dawn so he could be there when “the fish are biting.” He also enjoyed playing cards with friends, watching for the Goodyear blimp, visiting with neighbors on the front porch, going to aviation museums, and bowling with his team on Thursday nights. He was also a member of St. Joseph's church, where he served as a lector, and the Knights of Columbus council 2362. John most loved spending time with family and friends, and hosted many memorable events in his home with his wife, Peggy. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma (Wehrlin) Pamer, sister-in-law Therese Pamer, and brother-in-law Arthur Pittinger, John is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Margaret; daughter Michele (fiancée Bradley Hart) Pamer; son John P. (Julie) Pamer of Concord, California; grandchildren, Atticus, Bryce, and Allison; sister Jeannette Pittinger, brothers Larry, Russell (Patty), and Ralph (Janet) Pamer; and many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks for the compassionate care given by Meg, Stephanie, Renata, Jen, Amy, Amanda, and many others at Summa Hospice. Also to friends Jan and Bob Weinhardt for their love and support during this difficult time.

The family will receive friends Tuesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home, 3333 Kent Rd. (at Rt. 91) in Stow. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, 1761 Second St. in Cuyahoga Falls, Fr. David McCarthy, celebrant. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery immediately following services.
