C. Dunn

Tom met Irene, his wife, when they were 14 years old. They dated through high school at St. Mary's High School in Akron. Tom enlisted in the Marine Corp before finishing his Senior year. He was away for three years while Irene waited for him to come home. Tom was a member of the First Marine Division. He worked with demolitions and carried a flame thrower while in the Pacific theater. Tom, a true war hero, was awarded the Purple Heart. He came home and finished High School. Tom and Irene were married about a year later. Family and faith were always most important to Tom, raising five children in Akron, Toledo and Cuyahoga Falls. The Tom Dunn family was a charter member of St. Eugenes Parish where Tom and all the kids helped build the church with founder Father Bill Winchester and all the other parishioners at the time. Tom was the director of the St. Vincent DePaul stores in the Akron area for almost 20 years. This is where Tom's big heart and optimistic attitude shined through. He helped countless people in need. So many that we'll never know. He did it not for show or recognition, but because it was the right thing to do. Whether it was the homeless, the addicted, or the down trodden, everyone was treated with respect and dignity. Tom lead by example and taught his children the value of charity and work ethic. Everyone in the family worked or helped out at the St. Vincent DePaul stores and warehouse, including many nephews and other family members. This like everything else in Tom's life was done with Irene, his wife of more than 68 years at his side. Irene with faith in God and endless support has always been there with Tom in every way. His wedding ring grew around his finger until a doctor actually cut his wedding ring off for fear of medical complications. This was decades later, because he never took it off from the day Irene put it on his finger on their wedding day. This is a true Love Story. Tom made many new friends when he became the manager for the Dunn Quigley & Ciriello Ambulance business. Once again his optimism and big heart shined through. His retired years were spent traveling with Irene enjoying family and of course fishing with family and friends.
