Ernest F. “Ernie” Port, 90, passed on Dec. 4. Born in Cleveland, Ernie grew up in St. Ignatius Parish, graduating from John Marshall High School, then joining the US Army Air Corps for WW II. After the War, Ernie earned his Engineering Degree from Kent State University, and his Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University.
During World War Two, he served as a Radio Operator in a Martin Marauder B-26 medium bomber, in which he completed over 25 combat missions and earned an Air Medal.
Upon his return from the war, Ernie met Agnes Lucas at a USO Dance in Akron, Ohio. Agnes would be his wife of 56 years.
Ernie worked first for Goodrich, then Goodyear Aerospace from which he retired after 25 years of service. After retirement he accepted an Adjunct Professorship from Kent State College of Business.
Always civic minded, Ernie coached little league, was Scoutmaster for the Holy Family Boy Scouts Troop, and many other Holy Family Parish ministries: Eucharistic Minister, Usher, Senior Acolyte, and even playground monitor for Holy Family School. He was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus (Fr. Maruskin Council), and active with the Walsh Jesuit High School Booster Club.
Always active to support Veterans, Ernie participated in Oral History projects speaking of his war experiences; he supported the Military Air Preservation Society (MAPS) in Canton, and was Past President of the Marauder Society – a group of B-26 veterans.
Preceded in death by wife Agnes, and his youngest son John, he is survived by his eldest son Ernie, daughters Susan (Jerry) Hunt, Janet McMannis, and Jennifer (Steven) Malynn; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A heart felt thank you goes out to the staff of the Gardens of Western Reserve Assisted Living and Hospice for their loving care towards Ernie.
