Ernie

I first met Mr. Port back in 1974 when I began my career as a police officer for the Village of Silver Lake. Mr. Port had a habbit of driving his yellow VW loaded up with tree trimmings and brush back to the village dump on weekends. I "sternly"  told Mr. Port that he wasn't allowed to do that as our service director had made that a new rule. "Official dumping only" whatever that ment. Anyway, being the newest patrol officer, I was always working the weekends and holidays and over time got to know Mr.Port who quickly became known as friend Ernie. Not long after that I met the Port family and continued the long valued relationship between the Ports and the police department.  By the way, that little VW continued to make its trip to the dump.

Over the following years we shared many stories about our families and discussed many topics on what became routine short visits to the Port residence, usually in the driveway or on occaision  the Port's living room. I will always remember those visits.

Thank you Ernie for inviting me to attend the Marauder Society luncheons, it was my honor to be there with you.

Thank you Ernie for your and your family's love and support of the police and service departments as well as your committment to the Silver Lake community.

By the way, the Service Director knew what you were doing all along.
